Father’s Day is June 16 – a day to show Dad how much you appreciate him!

In honor of Father’s Day, we recognize our friend, Jim Murphy, an all-around great Omaha dad! Jim Murphy was born in Santa Barbara, California.  Graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah and received his bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Maryland.  He did graduate studies at George Washington University in Washington D.C. and during his student years served four summers as a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service and as a press aide in the U.S. Senate. He also served active Army National Guard duty in 1958 and 1959.

In 1960, Jim Murphy purchased Universal Press Clipping Bureau, now Universal Information Services, and managed the company’s growth until 2015.  Established in 1908, Universal Information Services has grown into a global provider of monitored news media and measurement services.  Jim served as a Brigadier General with the Nebraska Army National Guard from 1988 to 1994.  During his 36 years with the military he served as Assistant Adjutant General for the state of Nebraska as well as Commandant of Camp Ashland for 10 years, directing all training of over 5,000 troops.  Following this assignment, he was promoted to the rank of General and commanded all Army Guard troops in Nebraska.

His Army career also included additional education at the US Army Command & General Staff School and the Army War College. His last service ribbon was awarded for active duty during Operation Desert Storm, retiring in 1994. He is currently appointed by the Secretary of the Army to be the Civilian Aid for the State of Nebraska serving in this capacity for the past 17 years.

Jim Murphy’s civilian affiliations include:  past President of the Rotary Club of Omaha, Omaha Press Club, Nebraska Press Association, North American Conference of Press Clipping Services, past President of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, past President of Omaha Executive Association, Chairman of Omaha Human Relations Board, Board of Directors of the Safety Council of Nebraska, Vice President of Douglas County Historical Society, and Vice President of Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge.

Jim is married to Rita J. Murphy and they have two children, Elizebeth and Todd.  Elizebeth owns and operates Emspace+Lovgren, a design, marketing and PR firm.  Todd now owns and is CEO of Universal Information Services, a global news monitoring and media measurement service. Jim has four wonderful grandchildren, Tom, Jim, Teddy and Olivia.

And he hasn’t slowed done yet! Jim, a regular Lindley Clothing customer, is always well-dressed from head to toe!

Dress for Success with Lindley Clothing

Despite the shift in many offices from traditional suits to some form of business casual, the general rule of thumb remains the same - dress for the job you WANT, not the job you have.

Business casual is less formal than traditional business attire, but it is still intended to look professional and businesslike. Inappropriately dressing at the office can be the biggest roadblock to career growth, but many people don’t have a clear understanding of what is appropriate.

The experienced team at Lindley can help! Our advice – complete the look from head to toe. Follow these tips from Lindley Clothing:

  • Wear clothes that fit. Ill-fitting suits – either too big or too small – look sloppy and unprofessional. The Lindley team can help you create a style that is right for your body size and type, including custom-fit dress shirts that can be dressed up or down.

  • Build your wardrobe with a few staples. Versatile sportscoats and dress pants, paired with custom-fit shirts, will help you be prepared for any professional situation.

  • Know the basic rules. Button-down collared shirts can be worn with a sportscoat, but not a suit. The tip of your tie should hit the middle of your waistband – not longer or shorter. You need a t-shirt under a dress shirt.

  • Don’t forget about the shoes. It won’t matter how great your shirt, tie, pants, sportscoat look if your shoes are worn, don’t match, or need a good shine. The goal is a complete look from head to toe.

  • Don’t be afraid to branch out. If your office dress code is less professional, consider adding a patterned pair of socks, or a shirt or sportscoat if you’re more adventurous.
